The Meander Maps of the Mississippi These eye-catching maps, drawn by Harold Fisk — a geologist and cartographer working for the US Army Corps of Engineers — trace the ever-shifting banks of the Mississippi River from southern Illinois to southern Louisiana. Created to illustrate a rather dry government report in 1944, these cartographic marvels give even the untrained a very good sense of what the report calls the “stages in the development” and the present “behavior” of the river system. The map becomes the central image to document and tell the story of a tragic mass shooting in California and the strengths called forth in a life-long friendship. Join us in viewing the premiere of the film “Burden of Circumstance” by Karen Nilson and Devereaux Smith. Nilson and Smith will be with us to introduce the film and share in opportunities for reflection.
