June 11-17
We arrived at arrived at Kings Cross Station in London after a five hour train ride from Edinburgh. With a population of over 7.5 million, it is only slightly less than NYC. In a much smaller area, however, it is more dense. We took full advantage of the London Underground but we also walked and walked and walked. We took a couple of day trips by train, one to Oxford and another to Hampton Court Palace. In Oxford we walked the campus of Magdalen College, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford where C.S. Lewis taught. We ate at the Eagle and Child in Oxford, the gathering place of The Inklings such as C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Charles Williams and others and attended Evensong (the Anglican liturgy of evening prayer) at Christ Church. The other day trip was to Hampton Court Palace where Henry VIII resided.

We happened to walk by Buckingham Palace on June 13, the same day they were celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s birthday. Queen Elizabeth turned 81 in April but it has been tradition since 1748 to have the official celebration in June when the weather is better. I included a couple of pictures that show the fanfare.

On Sunday we worshipped at St. Paul’s Cathedral. We were fortunate to visit several of the cathedrals in London, including Evensong at Westminster Abbey and St. Martin-in-the-Fields.
