Black Seed Farmers Market: Every Sunday through 10/2016

with No Comments

The Farmer’s Market is back. On Sunday July 10, 2016, our little neighborhood will again have fresh vegetables, grass-fed beef and other organic materials for purchase. Salem used to be the site of a farmer’s market but following the death of its main champion, our neighborhood lost its only venue. Now, through the work of the Muslim Community Link (MCL), a new market is being established, the Black Seed Farmer’s Market, and we can be a part of it.

Working with Lutheran Social Services, BSFM has partnered with several local farms and farmers, most of who are refugees from Nepal, Iraq and multiple African states. The hope of the market is that by bridging the gap between farmers, masjidgoers, refugees, immigrants, senior citizens, churchgoers, and the community at large, BSFM will be fostering a community of empowered and educated citizens who will be able to make better decisions for their wellness and local economy.

MCL was awarded an initial grant through “The Garden Hill Fund of The Mountain School (TMS) of Vermont. Shabhaz Soofi, an alum of TMS, and board member of MCL contacted Salem to invite us to get involved in this new venture. This is a great opportunity to help us interact with the broader Worcester community and especially our immediate neighbors. After worship on June 26th, we will be taking up a retiring offering in support of our community and the market. Make sure you get in on the ground floor of this exciting new happening.
